Python

This course uses Python 3. The main Python website contains links to downloads and documentation. Here are some useful links inside that website:

  • Python 3.2.3 download page (scroll down to the "Download" section). You can use Python 3.3 if you prefer, but Python 3.2 is fine if you already have it installed.
  • Python 3 library reference, which contains descriptions of Python features. (It contains much more information than we will be able to cover in this course.)
  • A brief list of features of IDLE, the software we use to write Python programs. IDLE comes with Python.

Practical Programming: the Course Textbook

This course is intended to be self-contained. However, if you want more reading and practice, we are almost finished writing a textbook that matches the material from LTP1 and LTP2 quite closely, with additional examples and exercises.

Our publishers have provided a discount coupon code:

CourseraLearnToProgram

You use this coupon just before you check out, when the webpage displays the "Apply Coupon' link. Here is a picture:

You can choose to purchase an electronic version (PDF, ePub, mobi). You'll be able to download updates as we improve the book, and you'll get the final eBook when the book is finished. (You can also pre-order the paper version if you like, although it won't be printed until the book is complete.) If you want more reading and practice, this book is an excellent way to get it.

With the coupon code, the eBook version costs $15 USD. You apply the coupon right before you complete the purchase.

The Python Visualizer

We use software that helps you visualize program execution:
