Welcome to Week 2 of Genomic and Precision Medicine! Please get started by reading the Course Overview/Syllabus for an outline of course expectations and requirements. On this page, you will find the Week 2 learning outcomes, links to watch this week's lectures, and a description of this week's assignment.

Week 2 Learning Outcomes

This week, we will begin to explore the link between genetic variation and disease. We will pay particular attention to Mendelian diseases/disorders, where the relationship between genetic variation and disease is straightforward. By the end of Week 2, students will begin to be able to:
  • Clarify Mendelian inheritance
  • Interpret single-gene disorders using genetic testing
  • Summarize the techniques as well as the advantages and disadvantages of newborn screening
  • Explain prenatal genetic and carrier testing, screening, and diagnosis
  • Investigate the relationship between ethnicity and genetic screening
  • Understand current screening recommendations and practices
  • Express the complexities of ethical issues and controversies that come with genetic testing

Student Responsibilities and Deadlines

By the end of Week 2, students should:
  • Watch all Week 2 Video Lectures
  • Complete Week 2 Quiz (due by Monday, March 30, 9:00am Pacific time)
  • Complete Week 2 Peer Assessment (due by Monday, March 30, 9:00am Pacific time)
Detailed information on all these activities is provided below.

Quiz

Each week, students will complete a multiple-choice quiz on the week's video lectures. Correct answers and scores are only revealed to students after the quiz has closed (multiple attempts are provided in case a student experiences technical errors or other problems with their initial attempt). The quiz for Week 2 is due at the end of Week 2 (Monday, March 30, by 9:00am, Pacific Time). Quizzes can be found by clicking the "Quizzes" link in the left-hand navigation menu for this course.

Peer Assessment

In addition to the multiple-choice quiz, students will complete one short answer question in the peer assessments section of the class. Like the quiz, this is due at the end of Week 2 (Monday, March 30, by 9:00am, Pacific Time). Detailed information may be found by clicking the "Peer Assessments" link in the left-hand navigation menu of the course.

Discussion Forums

In the Discussion Forums, students can introduce themselves, discuss assignments, report technical issues with the course, and talk about each week's video lectures. If you are just joining the class, please take a moment to introduce yourself to classmates in the Introductions forum. Each week of lectures has its own dedicated discussion forum; visit the Week 2 Lectures forum to discuss this week's video lectures and concepts.

Readings

As mentioned in the Syllabus, there is no required reading in this class.  However, we recommend that you check out "Genomic Medicine: A Decade of Successes, Challenges, and Opportunities", an article which highlights recent and future developments and obstacles in genetic research.  Also, if you are new to genetics or feel you need a lot of brushing up, we recommend that you review "The New Genetics", a booklet which covers foundational knowledge in genes and DNA as they pertain to healthcare.
