Course Professor: Jeanette McCarthy, MPH, PhD
Jeanette McCarthy, MPH, PhD is a Visiting Associate Professor of medicine at the University of California San Francisco, division of medical genetics. She currently leads the effort to develop and implement a framework for precision medicine education at UCSF, including courses and webinars for practicing health care providers. She trained as a genetic epidemiologist at UC Berkeley under geneticist Mary-Claire King, followed by a Fulbright fellowship studying HIV/AIDS in Barcelona, and has spent her career in both industry and academia, most recently at Duke University. Her research on the genetic underpinnings of infectious and chronic diseases has led to over 50 publications in peer-reviewed journals. She recently co-authored a comprehensive review on the field of genomic medicine, published in Science Translational Medicine. Professor McCarthy is a passionate educator and has developed and taught courses in her field both nationally and internationally, and received a Golden Apple Award for her teaching at San Diego State University. In addition to her work at UCSF, she is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Duke University Center for Personalized and Precision Medicine, Editor-in-Chief of a patient-centered magazine from Big Science Media, Genome, aimed at educating and informing patients in the area of genomic medicine, and a consultant in precision medicine education (precisionmedicineadvisors.com).
Course Professor: Robert L. Nussbaum, MD
Dr. Nussbaum is the Holly Smith Professor of Medicine at UCSF, Chief of the Division of Genomic Medicine, and helps lead both the Cancer Risk Program at the Helen Diller Family Cancer Center and the UCSF Program in Cardiovascular Genetics. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the UCSF Institute for Human Genetics and directs the recently formed Genomic Medicine Initiative at UCSF. He came to UCSF in 2006 from the Division of Intramural Research of the National Human Genome Research Institute where he served for 12 years as Chief of the Genetic Diseases Research and Inherited Disease Research Branches. His research accomplishments include identification of mutations in a-synuclein, the first gene shown to cause a familial form of Parkinson disease, and positional cloning and characterization of the gene mutated in Lowe syndrome. He is the co-author of over 180 peer-reviewed publications in human genetics and lead author of a popular textbook of human genetics, Thompson and Thompson's Genetics in Medicine. Dr. Nussbaum has been on the Board of Directors of the American College of Medical Genetics and the American Society of Human Genetics, for which he also served as President. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine in 2004.
Teaching Staff: Bryce Mendelsohn, MD, PhD
Dr. Bryce Mendelsohn is a Clinical Fellow in Medical Genetics at UCSF and is a pediatrician based in San Francisco, California. He received his medical degree and PhD in Genetics from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. His research interests include metabolic genetics, genetic screening, and healthcare access.Credits
