Game Theory II: Opening Soon!

Hello All,

The course web site for Game Theory II: Advanced Applications https://class.coursera.org/gametheory2-003 will open Friday evening:  on Jan 8, 2016 at 11:59pm, PST. At that time the site will become live and the first week’s video lectures, slides, quizzes (ungraded), problem set (graded), as well as the forums and syllabus, will all be available.

The course presumes that you are familiar with the material covered in our first course (e.g., Nash equilibrium, dominated strategies, Bayesian equilibrium..., see https://class.coursera.org/gametheory-005 ).

You are welcome to take this more advanced course at your own speed: you can just follow the basic lectures and quizzes (ungraded), you can also complete (graded) problem sets and exam.

When the course is open, please have a very careful look through the syllabus.   It contains valuable information about the problem sets, final, and grading.   It also contains links to various background readings.  This course is a short one, but it moves faster and at a more advanced level than the introductory game theory course - and so the background readings can help put things in greater perspective - and they provide additional examples and references.

We look forward to the course -- Happy new year!  KMY

Game Theory: Grading Completed

Hi Folks,
The final grades are all tallied and Coursera will email you when the statements of accomplishment are ready for download - it may take some time for their system to process them all.
Congratulations to all of you, whether you just stopped by for some of the material, or took the course in its entirety!
Your activity in the forums was especially appreciated, and some shout-outs are due to people who shared a lot of their knowledge, questions, and thoughts there (and there are far too many of you to mention all): Paul Long, Vadim Nareyko, Jason Kehrl, Marlene Metzger, Sharma Kunapalli, Zahra Gambarova, Regis Kichei Kakinohana, Charles Engle, Uros Zecevic, Vyacheslav Volkov, and Patrick McInally.

Thank you all for making it an enjoyable experience, and best wishes for the future!
KMY
PS - If you are interested in more game theory:  the follow-up advanced `Game Theory II' will be starting on January 8!  (

There is also an post-course survey for you to fill out (under the survey tab on the left of the course page), so please send us your feedback when you have a chance.
We hope you have enjoyed the course!!  (and Game Theory II is just around the corner:)
All the best, KMY

Please note that unlike the problem sets, you have only ONE attempt at the final exam and it is timed.
Once you open the final you have four hours to complete it.  So, please make sure that you are ready for the exam before you begin, and that you have a reliable internet connection.
The exam is due by 11:59pm PST on November 15.
Best of luck with the final!

Game Theory: Heading to Week 3

Hello Folks,

We are about to start the third week of the course and the new materials are all up now.

Remember that the hard deadline for the first problem set is Sunday Night at 23:59  (Pacific Time).
After each problem set's due date, you will be able to see the answers for those problems: You can do so by submitting the problem set once more and the explanations will be visible. (This extra submission will not count in your score.)

If you experience any technical issues with the platform (videos not displaying, problem sets not submitting correctly, forums not accessible, etc.), then you should contact Coursera's faq's - often it is browser compatibility -  or send them a description of the problem through the help system rather than the forums, as we can control the content, but not the platform.

Enjoy the coming week's material on iterative removal of dominated strategies and some other solution concepts!

all the best,  KMY

Second Week's Materials Now Available

Hello Folks,
We are almost a week into the course now.
The second week's materials are up and now available.
Thank you for all of your energy, and the feedback and activity in the forums!
Here are a few comments and reminders:
The first week's problem set's suggested deadline is this weekend, and it's hard deadline for full credit is next Sunday evening.
Some of you remarked that the first problem set tells you a score but not which problems you got right and wrong.   We have set up the remaining problem sets so that you will get feedback on which problems are right and wrong.
all the best, KMY

Game Theory: Course Now Open

Hi Folks,

We opened the `Game Theory' course web site a few hours early!  You can go in and access all of the first week's materials: videos, quizzes (ungraded), and problem set (graded).  The course syllabus has detailed information about the structure of the course, due dates, grading policies, etc.    So, you should read the syllabus closely as soon as you have a chance - and before working on the problem sets.   Basically, you have two weeks to complete each problem set and have two tries at the problem set, with the maximum score of your two tries counting.   The details on the due-dates and credit are all found in the syllabus.  Again, the discussion forums are a great place to talk about concepts, give pointers, ask questions, and connect with other students.

Welcome and have fun!

Game Theory: Opening Friday Evening!

Hi Folks,

This is a reminder that the `Game Theory' course web site will open in a couple of days: on Friday September 11, in the evening.  At that time the first week’s video lectures, quizzes (ungraded), and problem set (graded) will be available.   The course syllabus has detailed information about the structure of the course, due dates, grading policies, etc.    So, please have a close look at the syllabus when you log on.  The discussion forums are a great place to talk about concepts, give pointers, ask questions, and connect with other students.

Again, you should feel free to take the course in as much depth as you wish.  You should complete the problem sets and final by their deadlines if you wish to earn a certificate of completion; and you are welcome to just watch videos and look around if you just want some familiarity with the topics but do not have time for the problem sets.

We are looking forward to it!
KMY

Game Theory: Course Launch Information 2015

Hello,

Our course, the Game Theory Online Course (http://class.coursera.org/gametheory-005/class/index), will open officially at 23:59 (late night, Pacific Daylight Time) on September 11, 2015.

At that time the first week's videos and problem set will be available.

Details about the structure of the course are available on the course syllabus ( https://class.coursera.org/gametheory-005/wiki?page=syllabus ). You should familiarize yourself with the syllabus as soon as the course opens, as it provides details on the structure of the course, the materials, deadlines, and grading.

A brief summary of the structure of the course is that it consists of the following parts:

Videos: The lectures are delivered via videos, which are broken into small chunks, usually between five and fifteen minutes each. There will be less than two hours worth of video content per week. You may watch the lecture videos at your convenience. We will have both high and low resolution versions available, with the low resolution ones better-suited for lower speed internet connections.

Slides: pdf files of all the lecture slides will also be posted on the web site.

Quizzes: there will be non-graded short ``quiz'' questions that will follow some of the videos to gauge your understanding.

Online Lab Exercises: after some of the videos, we will ask you to go online to a specific url (that will be provided to you at that point) to play some games. These are entirely optional, and designed to illustrate some of the concepts from the course.

Problem Sets (seventy percent of grade): There will also be graded weekly problem sets that you will also answer online, but may work through offline; those must be completed within two weeks of the time that they are posted in order to be graded for full credit. If you miss a problem set deadline, you may complete it before the end of the course for half credit. You may discuss problems from the problem sets with other students in an online forum, without providing explicit answers.

Final Exam (thirty percent of grade): There will be an online final exam that you will have to complete within two weeks of its posting. Once you begin the exam, you will have four hours to complete it.

We recommend that you try to finish the first week's problem set by then end of the first week, but you have until 23:59 on the 27th to complete it for full credit.

If you have any questions, please do not contact the professors directly, as with tens of thousands of students it is infeasible for us to respond. The course includes on-line Q&A forums ( http://class.coursera.org/gametheory-005/forum/index - they open with the course late on the 11th) where students can post and respond to questions. Students rank questions and answers, so that the most important questions and the best answers bubble to the top. We will check the forums periodically for urgent issues or questions. The forums are a great place to form study groups, ask questions, and to communicate with your classmates. Please take some time to go in and poke around once the class opens.

Thank you again for your enthusiasm and we look forward to a great course!
