Dr Michael Edwards

Michael Edwards is a composer, performer, and software developer. He is the author of the slippery chicken algorithmic composition package. His compositional interests lie mainly in the development of structures for hybrid electro-instrumental pieces through the integration of algorithmically produced scored materials with similarly generated computer-processed sound. He is also active as an improvisor on laptop, saxophones, and MIDI wind controller, performing for instance at the 2008 Montreaux Jazz Festival.



Dr Zack Moir

Zack Moir is a Teaching Fellow in the Reid School of Music, University of Edinburgh. He has a strong interest in music pedagogy, music in higher education, musical improvisation, popular music and the musical experiences of cochlear implant users, the latter was the topic of his PhD.  Zack is also an active musician and composer, performing as a saxophonist in ensembles and as a soloist, internationally and as a session musician.





Dr Richard Worth

Richard Worth's PhD was entirely devoted to the process of composing music. Before academia he spent eleven years (from 1990) as a full time musician based in New York, working as both as a session player, and as the musical director of The Groove Collective, a band that combined Jazz, Latin, and Funk forms. This led to six albums and performances around the world including Montreux and North Sea Jazz Festivals, the Roskilde Festival, Red Rocks Amphitheater Colorado, and Filmore West. He has also performed in orchestras, and as a solo flutist, including a broadcast on BBC Radio Three.



Dr Nikki Moran

Nikki Moran joined Music at Edinburgh in September 2007 after postgraduate research at Open University and University of Cambridge, and a teaching post at the University of East London. During her BMus degree at City University, London, she studied classical viola performance at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and took weekly classes in North Indian classical music performance with Prof. Gerry Farrell. Nikki subsequently studied as a sitar student of Pandit Arvind Parikh in Mumbai, India. From 2002 to 2007, busked regularly and led workshops in North Indian music for schools and community music projects. Nikki enjoys everyday music making with local ensembles and friends. She plays viola regularly with ensembles in Edinburgh and Glasgow, including Grey Area and GIO (Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra), and occasional gigs/concerts with groups including Edimpro and Orchestra of the Canongait.


Dr John Kitchen

John Kitchen is a Senior Lecturer in Music and University Organist in the Reid School of Music, the University of Edinburgh. Academically, much of his teaching is in the areas of harmony, counterpoint and keyboard skills; in addition, he teaches various 17th- and 18th-century historical topics connected with his own research interests. As a busy performing musician, he conducts the Edinburgh University Singers, is Edinburgh City Organist with duties at the Usher Hall, and Director of Music at Old Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church.  In addition, John is much in demand as a continuo player, accompanist, lecturer, examiner, adjudicator, writer and reviewer. John has recorded extensively for both Priory and for the Edinburgh-based label, Delphian Records.
