Welcome to Week 7 of Digital Signal Processing.

Since we are well past the midpoint of the class, this week we are going to take it super easy and give you a single day's worth of material. Take this as an opportunity to revise the points that are still unclear before we tackle the last two weeks of class!

Module 7 is a semi-theoretical, semi-applied module whose main focus is quantization, the operation whereby we convert analog values into digital values (i.e. binary numbers, in the end). Quantization does to amplitude what sampling does to time, but in quantization there is an inherent loss of information that we accept because, in the end, all real-world signal are subject to noise contamination; the question is how to control and reduce the disruption introduced by quantization. To study the performance of a quantizer we need at least a few notions of stochastic signal processing, which we will study in Module 7.1 and which will finally give us (some) tools to formalize the concept of noise. Finally, in Module 7.3 we will look at A/D and D/A converters and look at how these circuits are implemented in practice.

This week, we also have a special session, which will take you into the inner workings of an MP3 encoder and show you the way in which "smart" quantization techniques are used to compactly store your music files. Please make sure to take the time to explore the video and all the pages dedicated to the technology that literally changed the way we consume music.
