Week 2: Basic Charting

Image: The matplotlib architecture that shows the numerous kinds of artists available on the artist layer. The hierarchal structure shows several levels. The artists’ object has many child objects, some of which also have their own child objects. Patches.patch is one of the child objects of the artists object.

Matplotlib Architecture

  1. Backend Layer
1.1 Deals with the rendering of plots to screen or files
1.2 In Jupyter notebooks we use the inline backend
  2. Artist Layer
2.1 Contains containers such as Figure, Subplot, and Axes
2.2 Contains primitives, such as a Line2D and Rectangle, and collections, such as a PathCollection
  3. Scripting Layer
3.1 Simplifies access to the Artist and Backend layers
